Resolve Microsoft Entra restore error 'Microsoft directory read error'

Microsoft temporarily could not read directory information required to restore a user or a related object.

Applies to: Microsoft Entra restore operations

 When this error appears

  • A user or user-related restore item fails.
  • Microsoft returns an internal directory-read error.
  • No clear customer configuration problem is reported.

 Why this error occurs

This error normally represents a temporary issue within Microsoft’s directory service, such as a short-lived service problem or directory lock. It is generally not caused by an incorrect SysCloud setting.

 Before you begin

  • Record the affected object, destination organization ID, error time, and restore job details.
  • Check whether other Microsoft Entra operations are completing normally.

 Resolution

  1. Wait a few minutes to allow the Microsoft directory service to recover.
  2. Initiate the restore for the affected item again.
  3. If it fails again, wait and retry at reasonable intervals for up to 30 minutes.
  4. If the error continues beyond 30 minutes, contact Microsoft Support and provide the organization ID, affected object, and approximate failure times.

 Verify the resolution

Confirm that the retry completes and that the restored object appears correctly in Microsoft Entra.

 If the error continues

Contact SysCloud Support if Microsoft requires request details or if the error affects only SysCloud restores. Include AP1010, the job ID, affected object, and timestamps.
