What types of restores are available for Google Workspace in SysCloud?

SysCloud lets administrators restore Google Workspace data at different levels depending on the recovery requirement.

You can use SysCloud to restore an entire user archive, restore data from a specific Google Workspace service, recover individual items, restore Shared Drive data, or restore Google Groups and group members.

This article provides an overview of the restore options available for Google Workspace in SysCloud.

User level restore

A full account restore is available at the user level. This option is useful when you need to restore a user’s Google Workspace archive instead of restoring data from each service separately.

You can restore one user’s archive at a time. During the restore process, you can choose the required restore permissions for each app, select the destination user account, and continue the restore for the remaining apps.

Use full user restore when you need to recover most or all of a user’s Google Workspace data from backup.

Refer to this article for instructions on performing a user-level restore.

    Cross user restore

Cross-User Restore is used to recover backed-up data from one user's account and restore it to another user's account within the same domain.

Use this restore option when you need to transfer or recover backed-up data from one user account to another within your organization.

Refer to this article for instructions on performing a cross-user restore.

      Service level restore

Service-level restore lets you restore data from a specific Google Workspace service. This is useful when only one application’s data needs to be recovered.

SysCloud supports service-level restores for Google Workspace services such as Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, Shared Drive, and Google Chat data where available in the archive.

For Google Drive restores, you can choose whether to restore data to My Drive or a Shared Drive. You can also choose options such as restoring sharing permissions or creating a new folder for the restored data.

Refer to the articles below for step-by-step instructions on service-level restores.

                Item level restore

Item-level restore lets you recover specific backed-up items instead of restoring an entire account or service.

You can use item-level restore to recover a single file, multiple files, a folder, a specific version of a Drive document, selected emails, calendar events, contacts, or other supported archived items.

For Drive items, select the required file or folder from the archive and start the restore. If a file is inside a folder, open the folder in the archive, select the file, and then click Restore.

When restoring Drive files, you can select Restore all share permissions to retain the original sharing permissions. You can also select Create a new folder for restore to restore the data into a separate folder for easier review and access.

Refer to the articles below for step-by-step instructions on item-level restores.

                        Shared Drive restore

Shared Drive restore is used to recover backed-up Shared Drive data. You can restore an entire Shared Drive or selected Shared Drive items, depending on the recovery requirement.

Shared Drive data can be restored to the original Shared Drive, another Shared Drive, or a user’s My Drive. By default, SysCloud restores the data to the original location from which it was deleted. If required, you can choose another restore destination during the restore process.

Shared Drive restores also support restore options such as retaining share permissions and creating a new folder for the restored data.

Refer to the articles below for step-by-step instructions on Shared Drive restores.

Shared Drive to My Drive restore

Shared Drive to My Drive Restore is used to recover backed-up data from a Shared Drive and restore it to a user's My Drive.

Use this restore option when you want to restore backed-up data from a Shared Drive to a user's My Drive account.

Refer to this article for instructions on performing a Shared Drive to My Drive restore.

                            Google Groups restore

Google Groups restore is used to recover backed-up Google Groups and group membership data.

Use this restore type when you need to restore deleted groups, deleted group members, or group membership information without restoring unrelated user or service-level data.

Refer to this article for instructions on performing a Group restore.

                              My Drive Restore

My Drive to Shared Drive Restore is used to recover backed-up data from a user's My Drive and restore it to a Shared Drive.

Use this restore option when you want to restore backed-up data from a user's My Drive to a My Drive account.

Refer to this article for instructions on performing a My Drive to Shared Drive restore.

How to choose the right restore type

Use a full account restore when a user’s Google Workspace archive needs to be restored broadly.

Use service-level restore when only one Google Workspace service, such as Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Shared Drives, or Contacts, needs to be restored.

Use item-level restore when you need to recover specific files, folders, emails, events, contacts, or file versions.

                              Restore best practices

Before running a restore, review the restore destination carefully. For testing or validation, use a temporary user account as the destination account so restored data does not interfere with current data.

For Gmail restores, you can restore emails to a custom label. When this option is selected, SysCloud creates a default restored label in the mailbox and restores the emails under it.

For Drive restores, you can create a new folder for the restored data. This helps administrators identify and review restored files after the restore is complete.

You can also add comments during the restore process. These comments will be shown in the Restore Report for future reference.
